About Ghana's Regional Structure
Ghana is divided into 16 administrative regions, each with its own regional capital. This structure forms the backbone of Ghana's decentralized governance system, which CLGA actively supports through research, advocacy, and capacity building initiatives.
The regional structure facilitates local governance by bringing government closer to the people, enabling more effective service delivery and democratic participation at the grassroots level.
Each region comprises multiple Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) that serve as the local government units responsible for development planning and implementation at the community level.
